A 36-year-old man who doused himself in petrol and threatened to set himself alight has been shot with a plastic bullet, Gwent Police have confirmed. Armed officers were called to the Malpas area of Newport at 0040 BST on Wednesday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of affray and making threats to kill.

He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital suffering from minor injuries. He was released on police bail pending further enquiries later on Wednesday.

An investigation was started into the incident and police said that, as a matter of good practice, the case had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A Gwent Police statement stated that a baton round launcher was used to “incapacitate” the man and to prevent him from causing serious harm to himself.

“There is no indication at this stage that the situation was dealt with other than in accordance with established national practice.

“Indeed the early indications are that the prompt and decisive police action may have saved the man from death or serious injury.”
